Bishop Garrigan High School is home to one of Iowa's most successful academic teams. Since 1992 the team has won more than forty trophies for placing high in tournaments around the area. A former BGHS quiz bowl captain started playing varisty as a freshman for the University of Iowa Hawkeye college bowl squad and another has played for the Iowa State Cyclone team.

The BGHS Golden Bear quiz bowl team appeared nine times in the prestigious National Academic Championships (Dallas 1995, New Orleans 1996 & 2002, Washington 1997, 1998, & 2004, St. Louis 2003, and Chicago 2005 & 2008).  They have committed to making their tenth trip, a return to New Orleans, in 2009.

Here is the BGHS Quiz bowl schedule for 2008 - 2009

• Bishop Garrigan Invitational (October 18 = Won championship; four Garrigan teams made play-offs; five BGHS teams finished in top half of 51 teams competing, qualified for nationals)
• Twenty Questions (October = Perfect Score; again qualifying for nationals)
• Ankeny Scholastic Bowl (October 25 = Did not make playoffs)
• Algona Invitational (November 8 = Finished second out of 48 teams; again qualifiying for nationals)
• Little Dutch Quiz Bowl - MOC/Floyd Valley, Orange City (November 15 = Finished 2nd and 3rd in respective divisions (out of 28); scored more points than any team in the tournament; again qualified for nationals)
• Knowledge Master Open - Fall Quiz Bowl (December 3)
• Spirit Lake Invitational (December 6 - team won the freshman/sophomore division, again qualifying for nationals)
• Humanities Team Challenge - Garner (January 10 - team won championship, again qualifying for nationals)
• Boone Invitational (March 7 - two teams made playoffs; one finishing 4th overall)
• Knowledge Master Open - Spring Quiz Bowl (April 22 - finished 12th of 30 teams in Iowa)
• Iowa State University NAQT Tournament (May 2 - team made playoffs) 
• National Academic Championships (May 23 - 25 - New Orleans, Louisiana - team had several close games, but was winless)
